Pienza Elopement: Vows in the Wheat Fields of the Val d’Orcia
An intimate ceremony in the fields below Pienza, near the Pieve di Corsignano, with portraits on the cypress roads of the valley.
The story
A ceremony for two in the Val d’Orcia
This Pienza elopement took place in the open countryside below the town, in a field of ripe wheat looking south to Monte Amiata. The couple exchanged their vows and rings there, then we continued with portraits along the white roads and cypresses of the valley.

The ceremony
Vows and rings below Pienza
The ceremony was in the fields close to the Pieve di Corsignano, a Romanesque parish church just outside the town walls, known for its cylindrical bell tower. Pienza itself, the small Renaissance town above the valley, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
They stood facing each other in the wheat and read their vows from a sheet of paper.

After the vows, the rings. We photographed them close, his hands holding hers, with the wheat out of focus behind them.
The countryside
Portraits on the roads of the Val d’Orcia
After the ceremony we moved along the roads and fields around Pienza, where some scenes of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator were filmed. White gravel roads, rows of cypresses, the wheat cut in lines on the hills.
The whole landscape of the Val d’Orcia, with its farms, cypresses and cultivated hills, is itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The walk
Down a white road to the valley
The two of them walked down a dirt road towards the valley, hand in hand, between the cypresses.
Higher up, on the edge of a field, the wind took her veil.
